The ethical implications of The White Coats On Every Kid

CONSIDERED THE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF YOUR ACTIONS

"Doing good is not about doing something, it's about doing the right thing." *

"Serving is not about serving in some way, it's about serving in the right way."

Questions to help you:
  • Did you do good? What good?
  • How do you determine whether you did good or not?
  • What does sustainability have to do with it?
    • Was your service project sustainable?
  • What could you do differently in the future?
  • What is you biggest critique of the service project?

Personally, I believe that things which I and my club-mates have done over the two years of White Coats on Every kid were goods. To name some of the things we did, we have provided underprivileged primary school children with hands-on science experiments and have tried to promote interest in continued education. We collected different kinds of hands-on science experiments which can be easily done with primary school-aged kids since materials used for science are often expensive. To help kids understand the scientific lesson, we have also made worksheets. Our aim of White Coats on Every Kid was to give opportunities for education to kids who cannot get education due to different reasons.

However, I think these things are not the factors that makes WCOEK as a good activity. The things that makes me to determine WCOEK as a good activity is the fact that both kids and I were happy and that kids have learned something with joy. The kids that we have taught were underprivileged. Some of the kids lived on the house that Brent School has built for them and some had no parents or guardians to take care of them. In such kind of situation where daily things matter lot, it is undeniable fact that kids will naturally lose interest in education. Yet, our WCOEK have succeeded on getting the attraction of these kids. We have taught them not only science lessons but also the fact that they can still continue to pursue education. I do not know whether the lessons that we have taught are really useful for their life but I am sure that they have gained hope for education.

Like mentioned above, the things we do in WCOEK is to educate underprivileged kid. Since it is the education that we give to kids, I think what we do are very sustainable. Knowledges cannot be forgotten easily. Once WCOEK have succeeded in making kids understand, there is no need for worry. The knowledge can be used anytime when there are needs. I like what we do in WCOEK. Though it is sometime annoying to educate kids who are stubborn, once I manage to control them, I get satisfaction. Nevertheless, to improve the overall quality of WCOEK, i think it would be good to lower the number of kids that we teach. In this way, we can education kids with higher quality with more attention.

Final Reflection on Community Service

Community Service Club gave me lots of good experience. I had fun helping and i am sure kids in Little Flower Children's Home enjoyed playing with us. However, above all I earned learnings from community Service. I learned the value of service. Previously, I thought community Service as a club where bunch of hypocrites pretends to help. Obviously, i did not consider Community service club positively. Yet, as i join the club and perform the service, I learned that the act is not from hypocrisy but rather from good nature in man. After changing the way i view community service, i became more willing to help. I slowly learned to understand kids and to help them from the heart. Though kids sometimes made the work difficult, I tried to be patient. Eventually, I was able to open their mind. Secondly, I learned to collaborate with others. The work done in Community Service club is quite tough. We have to watch over the kids and grant what kids ask for.

Final Reflection on Lessons and Carol

We have finally performed Lessons and Carol in Chaepl. I feel both exhausted and energetic 2 hours of performance was quite tiring but the break after it was sweet. In this Lessons and Carol, i have discovered many things about me. First of all, i learned that i can sing. Personally, i hated going to singing room because i was shy of my voice. I thought others would laugh at my voice. However, after getting some compliment from my supervisor ma'am Julie, i became confident. Now, i am not afraid of singing
Secondly, i learned the power of collaboration and unity. Like what i mentioned in previous updates, choir only makes pleasing sound when it is together. Yet, singing together is difficult since other singer's voice can interupt. Sometimes it is even disturbing to hear. Nevertheless, through collaboration such difficulty was overcomed. Understanding between members allowed more fluent communication and increased the quality of performance.

Final Reflection on Global Issue Network (1st sem)

Global Issue Network White Coasts on Every Kid is most valuable club to me. I was one of the founder and i have gave most effort to this club. As a return, I also earned many things from this club. I would like to mention some of those in this final reflection.
First of all, I learned how valuable knowledge is. Normally, people consider me just as an academic person. Yes it is true. I don't like sports, games and social activity. I love studying. However, the Global Issue Network has changed my personality. It made me more socially active person. By me going to different communities and teach science, i learned that i can already help others with what i know. I do not have to be a successful economist or business man. I as a student can already teach and help others.
Through such experience, i learned the value of knowledge.
Secondly, i learned what it means overcome challenges. Since GIN is a new club in BISB, there were no foundation. No one knew what to do. This was our difficulty. Yet, our group and supervision Mrs. Wright did not stop working. Though we are not sure, we have worked on every aspects and try to come up with a concrete work. After all those challenges, our White Coats on Every kid has become an one of the well established club.
Thirdly, I learned how to collaborate. White Coats on Every kid is a club that requires tremendous amount of work. We have to design experiment and worksheet, find the best way to teach and guide kids. Obviously, one person cannot accomplish them. Thus, we have collaborated. We assigned roles effectively and helped one another if others needed help. The quality of work has increased amazingly! Once again the power of collaboration was great.
I believe there are still more to learn in this White Coats on Every Kid and i am ready

Update on Community Service 4

Today was our last day in Little Flower Children's Home. There are lots of feelings coming into mind. First of all, i think i will really miss this place. Over the two month of meaningful time in this school, i have made some friends. I did quite many activities with these kids. I have cooked them food, played soccer, basketball and ice breaker together. 2 hours in Little Flower Children's home after Monday school has became a part of my life. I can't believe that i will no longer experience this.
There were lots of challenges and collaboration made during this service. I have faced challenge of understanding and being patient. I also learned that if the members of community service club help each other, we can give people much better service. For the personal learning, i learned how blessed i am. I am so grateful that i can go to school, eat 3 meals a day and sleep in warm house. Those kids in Little Flower Children House' gave me good opportunity to look back what i have.

Update on Lessons and Carol 3

It is almost end and Our choir is about to perform Lessons and Carol in chaeple. I am quite nervous and worried. I am practicing almost everysingle day but still i am not confident enough. THe tenor part is so difficult to sing. The melody is odd and the songs do not make pleasant sound. I realized that choir is only worthy of hearing only when it is performed all together. I learned that i need collaboration with one another. We should be able to hear other people's voice at the sametime singing one's own. It is sure difficult but people say practice will make perfect. I think i should go for another round of singing

Update on Community Service 2

Kids love us and we love kids. The boundary is finally gone and we are open minded to one another. We can share what we feel and get help. Of course, there were also some difficulties. For example, i had to be patient because kids there were very naugthy. They liked to make pranks and tease us. I believe they wanted more attention from us. Because we understand that, we were patient.
THere were some new skills that i learned. I learned to cook!. Those kids who did not have parents had no were to get food. They were hungry and were in malnutrition. Our community service decided to cook for them and we did. It was fun and i really enjoyed it. I wish they will enjoy my servings

Update on Lessons and Carol 2

I am starting to remember the songs. After listening the music over and over, the melody became familiar. The problem is that i do not know the melody of tenor part. Sopranos are too good that i cannot even hear the tenors. I think i should have not joined the club. I am starting to slow other members. I am feeling shameful and weak. I feel sorry. However i won't give up. I will ask my supervisor Mrs. Julie to train me. I know it will require patients and time but i also know that it will all pay back in Lessons and Carol

Update on Community Service

Today, i just finished my first community service in Pinsao. THe place is called Little Flower Children's home and there were some unfortunate students who did not have parents. As a volunteer, i tried to help them with service and foods. However, it was hard in the beginning because those kids were afraid of us. To break the barrier, Community Service club performed ice breaker which requires communication between members. Naturally, those kids opened their mind and we were able to approach them more friendly. The difficult part in the activity was to find out what they need. Those kids in Little Flower Children's home did not really say what they needed maybe because they were shamed. I also did not want to offend them and hurt their feelings. In order to do so, i had to be close enough with them. In the process, i learned how to understand and communicate with our the use of words

Update on Lessons and Carol

Today was my first day in Lessons and Carol. I was assigned to be a Tenor singer for the choir. I have never joined a choir so it was quite an experience for me. Everything was new for me. I never knew that there were four sections in a choir (soprano, alto, tenor and base) and even in a same song, there could be many different notes. Since it was my first day, i did not know what to do. I did not know the songs, melody, and beat. I felt like i have ruined entire harmony of the choir. Thus i became timid. So far, i do not know what to do… I hope it would get better soon

CAS Progress Self- Evaluation

CAS Progress Self-Evaluation

Do you have a balance of activities across the three areas: Creativity, Action, Service? If not, in which area do you need more involvement?
Until now, I have quite balanced activities of three areas. However, there are only little activities that i have done so far. I think I need to increase my activities in all three field

Over the past year, did you average about 3-4 hours per week on different CAS activities?
No not always, Since there was season for activities, I had times were there were niether soccer, MUN, GIN and Community service. I am planning to add more activities so i can use my time more wisely.

Have you collaborated with others on any CAS projects? Which ones and in what way?
I have collaborated in Soccer, MUN, Community Service and GIN. In each of the activities, I have designed activity, acted on it with others and have disscussed on ideas. By using collaboration, I and my group members were able to come up with better ideas.

Have you engaged with any issues of global importance in any CAS activities? If so, what issue?
I have engaged in Global Issue Network. In GIN, our group has educated people in provinces in order to help them increase their understanding of technology and science. We are planning to help them develop their knowlege at much faster rate.

Would you describe your level of engagement with that global issue as low, moderate, or high? (Did you become an expert in that area, could you explain the local situation around that issue to someone, did you just become acquainted with the issue?)

I would describe my level of engagement with the Global issue as moderate. So far, I am not expert in the area but have acted with with other members to educate and develop ou project on WHite Coats on Every Kid. In the project, we have actually visitied the provinces were childrens have almost no education. In those places, we have demonstrated some experiments to broaden their understanding of scinece and importance of knowlege.

What is one issue of global importance (check the list HERE) that you wanted to get involved with but you haven't had the opportunity to do so?
I think Human trafficking is one of the most important global issue. Since we were not fully supported, it was hard to get involved with this issue. However, in this year, if there are opportunities, i would really like to be engaged with human trafficking

Which activity from last year was the most meaningful to you? Why?

The most meaning ful activitiy for me was Global Issue Network. It was most meaningful to me because it was our batch who have initiated the Club and have started from the very basic steps to come up with solid project. I feel more involved in this activity because i have worked harder than any other project.

Which activity did you not care for or was not very significant to you? Why?
Varsity soccer was not very siginificant to me. For main reason, I had not much talent in it. Even if i try har and practice with my friends all the time, i was set in bench and was given no opportunity to play game. I really wanted to become outstanding member but I think my skills were not capable enough to be good. Unfortuantely, i gave up on this activity,

What is one thing that you planned to do at the beginning of G12 that you have not begun yet?

I am planning to learn more on guitar with supervisor.

Have you initiated any activities? Have you initiated any part of any activities? Describe.
I and my friends have initieated Global Issue Network Club. In this club, I have designed Lung experiement to show children how our lungs fuction.

What was the date of your first involvement in CAS activities?

My first date of my CAS involvement was September 15th when i joined the Model United Nation Club.

Is your “List of Activities” page on your blog up to date?

No, I am doing it step by step.

How many of your blog posts are tagged with learning outcome labels?

12 posts are tagged with learning outcome labels

Do you have an final refection for every significant CAS activity you did last year? If not, which reflections are you missing?

I am missing my final reflection on Varsity Soccer

Update on Global Issue Network 4

Global Issue Network, White Coats on Every Kid is getting concrete. Through division of work, each members surely know what he or she needs to do and are very responsible. In the process of assigning role, there were some conflict due to amount of work. Yet, members learned to sacrifice their wants and were soon harmonized again. For me, my role is to check whether the experiment that members have thought are appropriate for the kids. I put myself in a position of kids who do not really know about science and try to test if i can really understand. While doing so, i felt blessed for what i know. It also made me motivated to study harder for those who were not given opportunity to work.
The work of Global Issue Network is very satisfying to me. I feel more valuable as i use my knowledge for the benefit of society. In addition, the collaboration done in White coats on Every kid gives me little joy. I hope members to be hardworking until the very end of GIN

Final Reflection on Varsity Football

Subic Cup is over and it was tough. It was not only difficult but also demanding. During the game, our members fought as they blamed one another's mistake. Obviously the game was full of chaos in the beginning. I never knew soccer was such a difficult exercise.
However, as game went on, things got better. I and other members learned to collaborate and assign position that will make our team much stronger. Instead of mockery, we gave compliments to one another and covered mistake by running much harder. Like a comic book, as we collaborated, our team got stronger and we even made up to 2nd place. This taught me that football is not just a matter of individual but rather a cooperation.
In Varsity Football, I tackled different challenges. I had to improve my fitness, learn new skills, help others and really commit myself in it. Nevertheless, there were also lots of things that i learned. First of all, I learned to communicate in a sense that will not offend others. Soccer is a violent exercise. We get injuries and of course we get angry. In those time, blame won't work. Through soccer, i learned to communicate peacefully even in times of fight. Secondly, i discovered that i could also be an athlete. Since i was young, i loved to play computer game, not exercise. I did so because i knew that i won't be good in it. However, Varsity soccer has changed my sight. I learned that if i try, i could also make fantastic goals. Lastly, Varsity soccer taught me how to be persistent. Like what i mentioned, soccer is a difficult game. I really wanted to give up many times. But i didn't. After all, the memory are so rewarding. I learn that effort will payback in the end.

Update on Varsity Football 3

Fortunately, I was able to join the Subic Cup as a proud member of varsity Soccer. The sad part is that i was not chosen for my ability but rather to fill up the team. My friends had to take Toefl test so i was chosen as a substitute. Yes it is quite shameful but i am not daunted. Now, it is my duty to play soccer good enough to fill up the space of my friends. The goal became clear. My goal is to be able to play full game in Subic cup. In order to do so, i am not self training by running cross country track everyday. I hope my effort will payback

Update on Varsity Football 2

Fortunately, I was able to get in to the Varsity Soccer team. Now there will be more practices that i need to join. It was announced that there will be Subic Cup near future. Set of varsity members will be selected for the Subic game. I know that I am not really good enough to join the varsity team but Subic cup is so tempting that it makes me to work harder. I am willing to sacrifice my time in order to get into team. I hope i can play a real match with my friends and savor the victory.

Update on Varsity Football

After writing proposal on varsity football, I was quite nervous. To be honest, I did not like soccer much because I was not good at it. Even in PE class, i was set aside because I wasn't talented. Nevertheless, I have decided to take CAS as my opportunity to really work on my soccer skills. Even before the trials, I practiced soccer with my friends who are much better than me. Through my friends, I was able to learn how to pass and dribble ball accurately. The help of my friends made me love soccer and I became passionate. After 1 month of practicing soccer, I began to love soccer and enjoy it as my hobby.

Soon, there will be soccer trial. I am very nervous. I would really like to show my passion and ability toward soccer to Mr. Maclean and other coaches to get in to the team. To pay back my friends who have helped me practice and develop my soccer skills, I will try my best to get in to the team

Fifth Proposal: Community Service

  • Activity: To help society that needs help and care
  • Goals: Feed poor children who have malnutrition and keep them good heath.
  • Impact: I will not waste food and always be thankful to my parents. I will get used to helping another person and try my best to understand other people's circumstances
  • Timeline: In Pinsao from 11th grader first semester to second semester.
  • Supervisor: Mrs. Mariano

Update on Global Issues Network 3

The GIN members have decided on the project that we will be presented on Global issue network conference. The name of the project is the White Coat on Every kid. Basically, the White Coat on Every Kid is a project that teaches the uneducated kids about science. The GIN members have came up with this project because science is a key factor that allows people to improve their knowledge and living standard. Because there are not enough material to work on complicated experiment in suburban towns, our project should be simple but useful.
In the process of designing experiment, I realized how gifted I am. The simple plastic bottle that i throw without thinking could be very precious toy for them. Once again, it reminded me of the gap between social classes. If these gap could be minimized, these children can also study like us with good equipments. I really want to help children to overcome the gap and
